Greensboro Gobbler 5K 2010

Been having some problems recently with my left knee so wasn't for sure how well I would do with this race. Also, the last few days haven't felt 100% and still hoping I can ward off the evil sickness spirits!
So I headed out from home at 8am. It was funny, not many people out on the road until I was turning on to Pisgah Church Rd and the line to turn into Country Park was backed up. Since it was a colder morning, I knew I could handle a nice warm up walk, so I drove past the masses and headed down to the Science Center to park. PERFECT idea. There were probably only about 10 cars in that lot. And a 1/2 mile walk to the start line was perfect.
I'm always so surprised to see so many folks out on a holiday, it's wonderful. I decided to line up in the 10 minute mile section (although I know I'm slower but thought it would help with my pace) Ended up chatting with a nice lady from Durham (who happened to be wearing the exact color/brand of shoes that I wear) and we chatted about our training and what we had accomplished and what we HOPE to accomplish this year.
Race gun goes off at 9am but of course it takes us a good 4 minutes to actually get to the start line (this is why I love my GPS watch). But just so many people that I could not start off at a normal pace and was going pretty slow, until the road opened up a bit and I could start passing people. Had a random pain go through my right calf (I've NEVER experienced this) but I kept running. No problem with my knees today (which I'm very happy about) but I now feel like I have some junk in my lungs trying to get out. I'm glad my time was under 40 minutes but wish I could have done better. I'm hoping if this is my average that I will be able to train decently for the upcoming half marathon in April.
Next race is a 10K trail race at Bur-Mil. I also hope the Resolution Run will happen again on Jan 1st.
Happy Thanksgiving to all :)
