Last year my pal Sarah and I ran the Shamrock-n-Run at UNC-Chapel Hill. This year we decided on the Raven Run since it was located in Asheboro.
Found my way to the destination with my trusty GPS but had some difficulty actually locating where the race began. Yes, they needed better signs!
Once we got checked in and had our numbers, we sat in the car because although it was a lovely, sunny morning, the wind was keeping it cold. Race time approaches and this is probably the first race I've ran where there were less than 50 participants. I turn to my friend Sarah and say "we definitely need to stick around after we have completed the race. I have a feeling we have a good chance of winning a medal today!"
I started off strong because I wanted to push myself, completing the first mile in 11 minutes. Then I had to shift back to my normal pace because the hills were just too tough on me (and yeah, I did have a walk a good amount of the race) But to my surprise, I ended the race under the 40 minute mark (which is always my goal) 37:17 was my finish time.
An even better way of ending the race, I came in 1st in my age division. My friend Sarah placed 2nd in her age division. I also ran into a very nice lady I had met at the Resolution Run and she placed in her division as well. So even though at the beginning we were kinda bummed about missing the race at UNC-Chapel Hill, it paid off to stay near home and run this race :)
Sweet - congrats on your age group award! I got one once and I don't remember ever being as excited!
